This book is not a synopsis of the Abhidhamma which, in itself, comprises seven volumes of the Pali Canon. Here, some aspects of the Abhidhamma have been related to practice. If this little book helps the reader to appreciate that the teachings of the Enlightened One are never mere theories but always stand to reason and can be verified in the crucible of his or her experience, then ist purpose will have been served.

Guide through the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, Nyānatiloka:
A Synopsis of the Philosophical Collection of the Theravāda Buddhist Canon.
Guide through the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, Nyānatiloka (PDF, 847 kB)

This book contains an outline or synopsis of the seven books of the advanced analytical collection of the Pāli Canon, the Abhidhamma Piṭaka. Each of the seven books of this collection is introduced and then systematically summarised by the renowned German scholar-monk Ñāṇatiloka Mahāthera. The principal aim of this book is to clarify the structure of the Abhidhamma works, most of which are quite large and complex, and thus aid the study of them. As a further aid, tables to clarify the factors of consciousness, etc, have been included as an appendix. This book is indispensable for students of Abhidhamma as well as for those who wish to get an introduction to and overview of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka.

Paṭṭhāna (Conditional Relations) in Burmese Buddhism, Pyi Phyo Kyaw:
Doctorial thesis by Pyi Pyaw Kyaw, King's College London, 2014
Download from the Research portal of King's College website (PDF 6 MB): Thesis Pyi Phyo Kyaw

Abstract:
This thesis explores the living tradition of Abhidhamma in Burmese Buddhism, examining ist pervasive role across all dimensions of Buddhist practice in Burma. Until very recently, little attention has been paid to Theravāda Abhidhamma in Western scholarship, and virtually none has been written on it as a living tradition. In this thesis I focus on the Paṭṭhāna, the seventh text of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, which deals with the functioning of causality and uses the mathematics of enumeration and combinatorics to do so. This is the first thesis to undertake a critical, in-depth study of Paṭṭhāna both as an analytical system and a living practice. This thesis applies multiple research methods to analyse the theoretical aspects of Abhidhamma and ist study, and to explore the living expressions of Abhidhamma, revealing ist ongoing and multidimensional significance in Burmese Buddhism.

Chapter One draws together different ways of explaining causality in Theravāda, exploring how the Paṭṭhāna provides a more complex and comprehensive explanation than found in the more familiar, more studied doctrines of kamma and dependent origination. Chapter Two explores the fundamental and pervasive importance of Abhidhamma within Burmese Buddhism historically and in the present, relating ist significance to the sociopolitical context of Burma. Chapter Three traces a long history of extensive composition of Abhidhamma and Paṭṭhāna literature in Burma, paying attention to specific works by well known abhidhamma teachers and different branches of Abhidhamma learning and teaching. Chapter Four analyses the pedagogical methods and memorisation techniques applied in Paṭṭhāna study and gives detailed explanation of the individual conditions themselves. Chapter Five examines the Paṭṭhāna through analysis of the mathematics, demonstrating not only the types of mathematics being used to further understand the nature and depths of causality, but also close parallels between the mathematics of the Paṭṭhāna and the mathematics of ‘combinatorics’.
